Not A Pound For Air To Ground
United Kingdom
Приєднався 15 жов 2013
As a kid I desperately wanted to be a fighter pilot. Poor eyesight, risible spatial awareness and an inability to understand even basic instructions knocked that idea on the head. But even as my career went down a different path, I retained an analyst's interest in aviation. In particular I like to try and understand the military-industrial systems in which aircraft were developed and the doctrines and concepts that governed their employment.
This channel is a way of getting ideas and research from my head into some kind of organised form. I really hope you enjoy watching them as much as I enjoy making them. But please remember that this is my passion and my hobby. I am not a professional documentary maker and I am at best an amateur historian. Please forgive the inevitable mistakes!

Why Stalin Didn't Want The ME-262 Copied (And What Happened Next)
The Soviet Union made a slow start in the jet age. They did, however, capture several examples of Nazi German jet fighters. This video investigates why they didn't simply copy and then develop the ME-262 and provides an overview of the twin-pod fighters that were developed as competition to the MiG-9.

AIM-7 SPARROW: Development And Evolution Of A Pioneering But Troubled Weapon System
Переглядів 40 тис.День тому
The AIM-7 Sparrow was a highly ambitious and sophisticated piece of 1950s technology, which pushed the boundaries of what was possible to cram into a missile body and airframe. Although its performance was disappointing in Vietnam, it remained the primary armament of USAF fighters until the AMRAAM entered widespread service in the late 1990s. Despite its importance to Cold War aviation history,...
Vought's F7U Cutlass Was Part Innovative Fighter And Part Safety Disaster
Переглядів 75 тис.14 днів тому
In recent times there have been attempts to rehabilitate the reputation of one of the most legendarily dangerous Cold War fighter aircraft: the F7U Cutlass. In this video I take a long look at its history, design and try and understand whether the Cutlass was a disaster, or just misunderstood. Main sources: "Naval Fighters No. 6" by Steve Ginter is interesting but typically eclectic in style "V...
Hawker's Forgotten Suez Warrior Was An Early Cold War Great
Переглядів 56 тис.21 день тому
Hawker's Sea Hawk came late to the carrier jet fighter game, a result of dithering at the Fleet Air Arm. As a result, it turned up straight wings at a time when sweep was only a few years away. Fortunately the Sea Hawk was a truly excellent aircraft. Despite its humble origins it was every bit a match for the Grumman Panther and McDonnell Banshee. When the Fleet Air Arm deployed to Suez, it was...
Ryan's Ultimate Piston Engined Fighter Had The Coolest Name In Cold War Aviation (And A Jet Engine)
Переглядів 36 тис.21 день тому
Ryan's Fireball was an interesting and innovative solution to the problem of getting a jet fighter aboard ship. Unfortunately it was underpowered and therefore lacked the performance to be useful in a jet-on-jet fight. The solution, inevitably was MORE POWER. And that was what Ryan produced in the XF2R-1 Dark Shark. Sources: There are two decent, but long out of print books on the Dark Shark. "...
Too Heavy And Too Slow, But The Douglas Skyknight Still Became A Korean And Vietnam War Warrior
Переглядів 101 тис.Місяць тому
The Douglas Skyknight was the US Navy's first attempt to build a carrier-capable all-weather jet fighter. Unfortunately jet engine technology in the late 1940s wasn't quite developed enough to get all of that equipment off and back on a carrier deck safely. Willy The Whale, as it was unkindly known, could have faded into obscurity if it wasn't for the Marine Corps. In their hands it fought as a...
ALKALI: The First Soviet AAM Broke Missile Design Conventions (But No Records)
Переглядів 43 тис.Місяць тому
The Alkali was the first wholly-Soviet engineered air-to-air missile. Having been developed in isolation from Western ideas, it incorporates a number of original design ideas, none of which could be said to have been successful. Even so, it is an interesting weapon and served in the Warsaw Pact Air Forces on three generations of fighters and into the 1970s.
The RAF's Venom Night Fighters Were Britain's First Line Of Defence

Another of the early 1950's interims, the Venom night fighter built on the excellent platform of the day fighter Venom to create the UK's most effective night fighter until the arrival of the Javelin. Sources: "De Havilland Vampire, Venom and Sea Vixen" by Philip Birtles is, in my view, the best single book on covering these aircraft "De Havilland Venom and Sea Venom" by W A Harrison is long ou...
GRUMMAN PANTHER: Korean War Warrior
Переглядів 85 тис.Місяць тому
The Grumman Panther was a happy accident of aircraft procurement, which resulted in one of the most durable and effective aircraft of the Korean War. Although not the most sophisticated or high performance aircraft of its era, nonetheless, its combination of Grumman toughness, ease of maintenance and heavy armament makes it one of the best combat aircraft of the Cold War. I hope this video does...
The US Navy's First Carrier Bomber Was Designed In A Barber's Shop
Переглядів 11 тис.Місяць тому
Despite being designed in a barber's shop, the Douglas DT-2 is a very important combat aircraft. It was the first US strike aircraft specifically designed to operate from a carrier. It was the first US carrier torpedo bomber and the first to launch from a carrier loaded with a torpedo. In 1924 a formation of 18 DT-2s launched the first mass (practice) attack on US battleships manoeuvring at sea...
SUPERMARINE ATTACKER: Without This Curious British Fighter, There Would Have Been No MiG-15
Переглядів 91 тис.Місяць тому
Although it was the first service to land a jet fighter on a carrier at sea, the Royal Navy was slow to give operational squadrons jets. When it did so, the first attempt was the Supermarine Attacker. It would be fair to say that the Attacker was a rather disappointing fighter. It performed quite poorly and was a bit of a death trap. But the Attacker has one claim to fame. In developing it, Sup...
HOGSHIP: The Last Of The Sports Models Was A Sabre Like No Other
Переглядів 95 тис.2 місяці тому
The F-86H was the last of the land-based Sabre variants. Featuring the most power of any Sabre, 20mm cannons and Sidewinders as well as nuclear weapon delivery capability, it was a super version of the legendary F-86. And yet it is mostly forgotten in the contemporary reckoning, simply a footnote on the Korean War A, E and F. This video therefore focuses entirely on the Hog. It is a fascinating...
The F2H Banshee Was The Best Straight Wing Jet Fighter
Переглядів 36 тис.2 місяці тому
This video covers the later, long fuselage McDonnell F2H Banshees. Although straight winged, the Big Banjo was an excellent fighter with unparalleled range and high altitude performance for the time. It also ushered in the era of radar-equipped Navy fighters operating in regular squadrons outside of night and all-weather detachments. These aircraft tend to be a footnote in the Banshee story rat...
The History Of The Hawker Aircraft Company: 60 Years From Woodcock To Hunter, P1121 And Harrier
Переглядів 52 тис.2 місяці тому
The Hawker Aircraft company was one of history's most influential and important aviation companies. Emerging from the ashes of Sopwith in the early 1920s, under the leadership of Tommy Sopwith and Sidney Camm, its Hart and Hurricane were the aircraft that prepared Britain for war in 1939. After that conflict, its under-rated Seahawk and feted Hunter and Harrier took the RAF and Fleet Air Arm in...
HERE COMES THE BANJO!: McDonnell's F2H Banshee In Detail
Переглядів 61 тис.2 місяці тому
McDonnell's Phantom was a major success for the company, despite its limited capabilities and small production run. It proved that a jet could be a useful carrier fighter and that McDonnell could make a combat aircraft. Their next attempt was the best of the straight winged carrier fighters: The Banshee. This video covers the original 'short fuselage' Banshees, with particular focus on Korea. S...

AN INTERCEPTION AT CHRISTMAS: Early 1950s Fighters Battle A Bison To Save Seattle
The term "simply copying" in engineering is merely a contradiction because the involved effort is never simple and the final product is never a direct copy. Reverse engineering has become a popular and appealing narrative in modern aircraft histories, often giving the false impression that "copying" someone else's work is simpler, cheaper, faster, and more practical than creating your own design. However, in reality, reverse engineering can prove more costly, less efficient, and more troublesome than straightforward engineering. Generally, it is always better to design and engineer your own product rather than trying to understand the reasoning behind another engineer's designs, especially when that engineer is unavailable for questioning.
...more than 700 USN aircraft destroyed in accidents, in 1954 alone? That can't be accurate...
This is a wonderful and informative video. Thank you!
The first plane with a great radar in WarThunder. I made a lot of kills, feeling like an AWACS, where none else had a radar. Good bombs also.
The f86 asserted its dominance over WHOM
just "think of" any SU 11 with those Huge Cannons! Also used in "ground attack?" think of 57 0r 75mm? auto, nevermind the smaller ones, all with Prox fussed ammo? WHOOOW? ARTY from God? and not much good hi speed AA at the time.
Stalin and the West didn't want to copy it because...the Me 262 was crap. It's what happens when you put a prototype into production lacking the materials needed to produce it.
Even in Nazi Germany ongoing desogns would have made the Me 262 obsolete if the war had somehow continued (and Berlin hadn't won the Nuke sweep stakes from Hiroshima). While the HO (or Go) 229 flying wings are a darling of many but I think the FW Ta 183 (which had won the contest against the Me P1901 for the next fighter) would have replaced the production of Me 262s if time allowed. However at the end of the day it was the lack of critical materials to make lasting and stronger turbo jet engines which was always going to cripple Germany's ability to keep up with the Allies.
Captured German technology n technicians played a big roll for Russias first jet powered jet fighters.
Yak-28: Nothing wrong! LFAX-9: Man...
Chechia is not a western country apparently 😂
Great video...👍
A good 10% of the video is waffling about how it's not good compared to a second generation jet fighter, when in the same video we have to remember it's France's *first* generation jet fighter. Try building a jet fighter when your country has been levelled flat, torn apart by Vichy traitors, it's brains drained by escaping Europe and Operation Paperclip 😅 Russia, USA both had industrial might and Paperclip, the UK whilst recovering had already made progress into jet designs nationally at least.
I had no idea _any version_ of the _Mirage_ was designed with a rocket engine.
*_"He was brighter, I was smarter. He was faster, and I was quicker."_* - THE GREAT WALDO PEPPER [1975]
Are You nuts? Stalin's engineers copied the Me-262, but only with 1 engine. The jet is called MiG-15.
The _F-100 Super Sabre_ is a REALLY COOL looking fighter.
@notapound >>> Another great video...👍
An uncontrolled drone wreaks havoc in 1950s Australia...😊
@notapound >>> Great vid...👍
Because the ME 262 was a pig of a plane - good performance, yes, but the engines had a flight life of 10 hours each.
The MiG 15 was a German design with a British engine.
One of the greatest blinders of all time.. was Britain gifting jet engine tech to Russia.. within a few years the Russians were using them against British pilots over Korea …
You get the very best photographs and film. I tip my hat to you.
According to some documentation, the UK sold the jet engines to the Soviet in exchange for payment to be made in Gold Bullion that the UK desperately needed at that time.
It has to hold the #1 spot on the top chase plane list, yes?
10:00 The mighty Kiwi!🥰
@notapound >>> Great video...👍
**crackle** _Watch for chutes_ W T F ?!😢
RIP Mr. Brown. I have no doubt he tried to save that asset. I would love to know how the F-5 faired against the MIG-17. Makes you wonder why there were only 2 rounds.🤔 Seeing how the F-5 was used as an agressor for decades and decades says a lot to me. Maybe they didn’t want that information getting back to Northrop.🤨
@notapound >>> Great video...👍
The triple engine design at 6:48 looks interesting. Could a triple engine design have helped with the lack of power?
Shouldn't this one be "Every Pound for Air to Ground"?

Wow, great video. Must have put a ton of work into a topic that only appeals to DCS players and a few enthusiasts - yet you made the video. Probably won't bring you riches, but it will bring you recognition - so once again: thanks!
I would like to see a video about electronic warfare in Korea. I thought that was a pretty cool topic you brought up in this video. Let me know if I could be of any help if you do decide to make a video about that subject.
Copying makes an very big part in the history of flight development everyone did everyone does.
Is ot true that they also got Patent rights about Jet engines from rols royce?
I wonder how dod they called their Program of summoning Scientists and packing them off in Russia. The American Army callrd it Operation Paperclipp
No it wasn't. It was designed and built to rival the mig21. Which did it with one engine.
Bonjour , merci .
Somehow a Spinal Tap reference made it Into this!
The reason was the German jet engines were crap, none of the Russian aircraft that were built using these engines were successful. The MiG-15 used a copied Rolls Royce Nene
centrifugal flow engines were just more mature at the time vs axial flow and easier to integrate
I cannot tell you how much I enjoy all your aviation videos. You lay out the facts and history so clearly, concisely, and entertainingly that it makes them compelling even if the chosen subject wasn't about my favorite aircraft. I served 7 years in the USAF and have a pretty good understanding of USAF aircraft history and have found everything you say is accurate. I also love that your videos are narrated by you and not a digital bot which I hate. Keep up the good work. BTW I love your English accent, it so reminds of my English grandmother.
*stupid Brits had no business giving RR jets engines to the Reds*
